Abstract
Abstract The evolutionary history of the peoples of South America is a complex story involving adaptations to a variety of ecologies, cultural innovations, and the dramatic effects of European contact. With the advent of genomic studies, combined with archeological evidence, new light has been shed on some of the intricacies of South America’s prehistory. In this chapter, we explore the contribution of genomics in understanding the first migrations into the continent. We also examine how people first adapted to some of the most extreme environments, such as the Andean highlands, as well as to cultural change. We describe the presence of ancient pathogens before the arrival of Europeans and discuss the dramatic effects of contact. Finally, we broach the question of how an understanding of human evolutionary history can link modern populations to the legacy of ancient civilizations—a legacy that has been largely wiped out by European influence.
