Abstract
Abstract Historical archaeology in South America is no longer a recent enterprise; an ever-growing number of national and foreign scholars have carried out an impressive diversity of projects across the continent since the middle of the twentieth century. This chapter offers a brief overview of the history of the subfield in the region and some of the current research. We approach these diverse works through a geographic and historical approach over a thematic treatment. Our objective is to show the growth of historical archaeology in several countries and how the investigation of the postcolonial and contemporary past impacts the formation of our modern society.
