Abstract
Abstract Geoarchaeology is a fundamental part of any research dealing with the formation of the archaeological record. No reliable interpretation of archaeological material (e.g., artifacts, bones and human interments, etc.) can be achieved without comprehensive knowledge of the natural and anthropogenic processes that created and transformed an archaeological deposit. In South America, geoarchaeological studies began in the 1990s and are nowadays widely recognized as being an essential component of any archaeological research. In this chapter, we review the contributions of geoarchaeological research in different areas of South American archaeology. A selection of work is summarized and grouped under two main axes: landscape reconstruction and site-formation processes. Our goal is to showcase the multiple contributions of South American geoarchaeology for understanding the human past and to highlight its role in the development of cutting-edge archaeological research in the continent.
