Abstract
Abstract Shell-bearing sites constructed in coastal Brazil represent a particular expression of the relationship between sambaquieiros communities and the environment. In this chapter, I argue that particular aquatic animals could have acted as mediators between the living and the dead, and their accumulation-forming structures transformed the seascape. This perspective perceives fish and shellfish as much more than possible items on the menu; they were meaningful animals. The manipulation of the seascape is a strong characteristic of sambaquieiro society, and the use of faunal remains with strong symbolic connections seems to indicate that mounds communicated messages to these communities and to their neighbors.
