Abstract
Abstract Rawls’s theory of justice includes a commitment to “fair equality of opportunity” that takes priority over the difference principle. This chapter explains what fair equality of opportunity means for Rawls and examines its relationship with the other principles of justice. Then it scrutinizes the arguments he makes for it, and for its priority over the difference principle. It explores a range of major criticisms of those arguments. Then it examines what fair equality of opportunity might mean for the design of the basic structure of society within the context of Rawls’s theory, and how it might be used in non-ideal theory.
