Abstract
Abstract Several recent syntheses show that the study of rock art has become a particularly relevant topic in South American archaeology. New recording and analysis techniques for these visual and material expressions have made it possible to specify aspects related to their production, location, and dating. Systematic studies allow us to account for a particular richness of manifestations in regions where until now research has focused on other areas, such as the Amazon and the Lake Titicaca basin. Finally, new discoveries and studies of the Nasca geoglyphs allow us to discuss their antiquity and association with different cultural traditions. In short, this chapter summarizes some of these most recent discoveries with a view to demonstrating the importance of promoting the development of research on rock art in the South American continent.
