Abstract
Abstract The western slope landscapes of the Chilean Andean mountains, from the extreme and arid lands in the north to the beginning of the fertile valleys in the south of Chile, were inhabited by hunter-gatherers and fisher societies with a diverse range of economic and social practices since almost 13,000 years ago. The evolution and historical processes of these societies were deeply associated with the ecological conditions of each area and period, as well as with the development of cultural changes and new technologies: as observed in the morphological and functional shifts in tools, novel devices such as boats, and during later times, the domestication of camelids and plants and sedentarism. Nevertheless, the hunting and gathering lifeway persisted in different regions until Inka times, and hunting and gathering as economical practices were maintained by some sedentary and herder populations. This shows the complexity of social changes and the existence of different cultural trajectories in distinct groups, even though they were living in the same area and at the same time.
