Abstract
Abstract This chapter offers insights about major actors and the most recent developments in Islamic reform in Kyrgyzstan. The first section introduces the legislative and institutional aspect of the bureaucracy of religion in Kyrgyzstan, which acts as a bureaucratic tool for the government of Kyrgyzstan to weed out multiple Islamic movements in favor of the Tablighi Jamaʿat. It is followed by a critical review of the current dominant role of the Tablighi Jamaʿat and the unique conditions that enabled it, including its functionality for the Kyrgyz state. Banned in all Central Asian Republics other than Kyrgyzstan, the pervasiveness of the Tablighi Jamaʿat in Kyrgyzstan is a contested issue that comes under serious criticism from various segments of Kyrgyz society. Subsequently, Turkey’s burgeoning challenge to the Tablighi Jamaat’s dominance in the shape of the Diyanet and its designs with regard to Kyrgyzstan are addressed. Lastly, smaller Islamic organizations that cater to more limited sections of society are also discussed.
