Abstract
Abstract This chapter analyzes the development of the Inter-American System on Human Rights Protection (IAHRS) since its establishment, divided into three historical periods spanning over seven decades. It offers an explanation of the evolution of the regional system in pursuit of transformative change, tackling some of the major human rights and democratic challenges of the Americas. The chapter provides an overview of the main elements of the IAHRS, such as its structure, tools, agenda, standards, and working methods, including how these have evolved. This overview highlights how the system has developed into a robust human rights protection framework, adapting to changing regional and international contexts, addressing emerging challenges, and interacting with diverse social and institutional actors involved in its sphere. This analysis helps explain the impact of the IAHRS to date, while also outlining the challenges it faces to its legitimacy and effectiveness.
