Abstract
Abstract This chapter reviews the importance of state claims to precolumbian material culture reflected in national archaeological heritage policies throughout South America. We emphasize four points: international heritage conventions, archaeological heritage legislation associated with the state’s role in archaeological resource management, consultation with Indigenous peoples in heritage law implementation, and supranational mechanisms in matters of heritage protection.
