Abstract
Abstract The concluding chapter speaks to patterns of micro-segregation found in diverse human societies, as well as opportunities for future inquiries. How has micro-segregation operated across human societies? And why does it separate dominant and subordinate groups in specific societies? This discussion considers possibilities for developing a more comprehensive theory within a comparative-historical framework, as well as methodologies that may allow scholars to move toward an understanding of prejudice and historical causation in the roots and consequences of segregation. Finally, it addresses the challenging case of gender apartheid, a widespread practice of micro-segregation in which spatial boundaries between individuals with distinct gender identities coincide with frequent and often intimate interactions.
