Abstract
Abstract Sound archives have been exemplary at collecting analog sound recordings, but they are less well equipped to welcome the volume of digital collections from DJs. This explosion of digital music collections can be traced to early digital DJ performance software, Final Scratch 1.0, a digital vinyl system (DVS) that began to shift the DJ practice toward all digital sound collections. DVS allowed a DJ to physically perform the same way with two turntables and proprietary control vinyl records, while changing how they prepared their music libraries and made selections from digital crates of music. The classification of DVS performances as a processual format using format studies and archival principles informs why archives should look into “archiving the making” of this music in addition to the collection of its sound recordings. This combination of creative tools and software with the objects of creation enriches the historical record of this music tradition by demonstrating the embodied origins of many electronic dance musics in disembodied, processual performance formats.
