Abstract
The role of surgery in oncology is not an independent alternative to other modes oftreatment. Rather, it is best employed alongside an understanding of the otherclinical oncology avenues with the best outcomes stemming from collaborativeinteractions with diverse teams of stakeholders, including the patient and caregivers.Similarly, surgical oncology as a discipline is not meant to be a standalone disciplineof study, but one that is interwoven with research that includes contextualconsiderations. This chapter further develops these ideas, based on the experiencesand recommendations of the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO).
