Abstract
In this chapter, we look forward to what the future may hold for the PEPT technique, including the detectors, tracers and algorithms used, and the new applications made possible thereby. We discuss the manners in which ongoing improvements in detector physics may facilitate still greater temporal and spatial resolution in future PEPT systems, while the further exploration of modular, portable positron cameras may facilitate the study of a still wider range of systems, in particular through the use of ‘on site’ PEPT to explore those too large, dangerous or otherwise unsuitable for laboratory studies. We also discuss the manners in which—in tandem with new algorithms and the aforementioned developments in camera resolution—improvements in our abilities to effectively manipulate, radiolabel and thus track micron-scale particles may open the door to significant new applications in the biomedical field. In addition to advancements in PEPT’s current abilities, we consider also how novel PEPT algorithms may facilitate entirely new functionality, facilitating, for example, the study of phase-changing media.
