Abstract
To image the dynamics of a system using positron emission particle tracking, we require two main, physical components: a radioactively-labelled ‘tracer particle’, and a suitable detector system, or ‘positron camera’, to record the motion of said tracer. In this chapter, we discuss both of these items in detail. We begin by discussing what makes an ideal, non-invasive tracer for PEPT imaging, before detailing the two main manners in which a ‘normal’ material comprising stable atoms may be labelled with a suitable positron-emitting radioisotope. We then move on to discuss the detector systems used in PEPT, providing an overview of the main components from which they are built and the relevant physics thereof, before describing the various geometries into which these components may be formed, including an adaptable ‘modular’ geometry unique to PEPT imaging. The chapter ends with a discussion of how PEPT tracers, detectors, and even whole PEPT experiments may be numerically modelled using Monte Carlo simulations.
