Abstract
There exists a diverse range of techniques used by scientists and those in industry to gain insight into the mechanics and dynamics of particulate and multiphase systems. These include both experimental methods, encompassing imaging techniques, such as particle imaging velocimetry x-ray CT or MRI, and characterisation techniques, such as powder rheometry or shear testing, as well as numerical methods such as the discrete element method (DEM) or continuum fluid dynamics (CFD). Each of these techniques, however, carries its own unique set of strengths and weaknesses, meaning that when planning a scientific study, one must carefully choose the tool—or combination of tools—most suited to the task at hand. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the experimental and numerical tools most commonly used in the study of particulate and multiphase systems, providing in each case an elementary introduction to the technique and its underlying physics, and a summary of its major strengths and weaknesses relative to the PEPT technique which forms the focus of this book. In each case, we also provide a range of key references for those wishing to gain a deeper insight into the technique.
