Abstract
In this chapter, we provide a simple and accessible overview of the positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) technique and its associated physics. We explain how solid particles can be ‘labelled’ with positron-emitting materials, allowing them to be used as ‘tracers’ to non-invasively track the flow of particles and/or fluids, and describe the fundamental operation of the detector systems used to record their motion. We begin with a somewhat idealised picture involving ‘perfect’ detectors and a point-like source, before introducing complicating factors such as the limited spatial resolution and finite detection rate of real positron cameras, and the scattering of the gamma rays used to track particles. We include also interactive examples in which the user can directly observe the effect of varying key parameters such as the detector resolution, the prevalence of erroneous events, and the positron range, and thus gain a deeper understanding of the technique.
