Abstract
Styles and orientations of small folds in schists on Hoosac Mountain provide the basis for a new interpretation of a structure depicted by Pumpelly, Wolff, and Dale in 1894 and by Prindle and Knopf in 1932 as an anticline overturned to the W. Geometric procedures utilizing the axial projection method of Argand show that the structure is a recumbent fold with a gneissic core. The axial projection is valid only if the form of the fold in profile persists in the axial direction. The Hoosac nappe meets the classic tests for axial continuity proposed by Wegmann and McIntyre. Reliability of these tests is confirmed by a study of separate profiles of a doubly plunging fold system, mapped by White and Jahns, on opposite sides of an axial culmination.
