Abstract
Morphological data and weight percentages for zircon populations at successively higher elevations within a gently dipping, granodiorite dike argue against apparent evidence for gravity settling of heavy minerals. Uniformity of reduced major axes, weight percentages for zircon populations in the main body of the dike, and field relationships are the basis for this conclusion. Variation of weight percentages, elongation of zircons, volume of zircons, and reduced major axes for zircon populations in the lower contact zone are attributed to the sorting influence of laminar flow accompanying magma intrusion. Sharply bounded primary flow layers involving zircon, biotite, and other heavy minerals; the presence of steeply dipping disconformable platy flow structures; and the absence of abnormal amounts of heavy minerals in some gentle depressions at the base of the dike argue against gravity settling. This is consistent with a magma of normal viscosity as indicated by the medium- to fine-grained character of the rock and by the absence of evidence for excessive amounts of fugitive constituents. The observations are consistent with early crystallization of zircon in felsic igneous rocks. The separation procedure followed was designed to obtain the closest possible approximation to a true zircon population from a rock sample.
