Abstract
The Kilauea lava flow of 1823 issued from a 6-mi-long part of the Great Crack, a fissure on the southwest rift zone. It is a very thin, very fluid pahoehoe flow. The eruption was accompanied by only weak fountaining. Ball lava along the fissure formed by talus fragments in the fissure being repeatedly coated by the ascending lava. Phreatic explosions occurred near the sea.
