Abstract
A 4 m-wide fault zone was intersected by borehole ATK-6 at 1090 m true depth in the hornblende quartz monzodiorite rim of the Eye-Dashwa granite pluton near Atikokan, Ontario. The fault is composed of four major slip surfaces, up to 0.3 m wide, with a mean attitude of 182 degrees /67 degrees W, separated by a reticulate network of secondary fractures inclined at less than 25 degrees to the slip surfaces. Sinistral strike-slip displacement seems to have occurred across the fault. Faulting occurred during the late Archean or early Proterozoic under greenschist facies metamorphic conditions at estimated pressures of 2.5 to 3.5 kb and temperatures in the range of 325 degrees to 400 degrees C. Very low magnetic susceptibility values reflect breakdown of titanomagnetite in the fault zone relative to the monzodiorite while a weak but broad radioelement enrichment is shown by relatively high natural gamma values and modest increases in U concentrations. Low resistivity, fluid resistivity and acoustic velocity, and high spontaneous potential values show that the fault zone is electrically conductive and suggest that it may be hydraulically permeable, compared to the wall rock.\--Modified journal abstract.
