Abstract
Meteorite showers are usually caused by the fragmentation of one large meteorite in its rapid course through our atmosphere, rather than by the invasion of a swarm of initially discrete particles. In the process of fracture many small particles, including microscopic dust particles, must get separated from the main mass. These small particles have the fusion crust and morphological properties of meteorites in general. They differ from cosmic dust that enters the atmosphere directly from interplanetary space in that the cosmic dust particles are practically unaltered by impact with our atmosphere.
