Abstract
A crystallographic-chemical discussion of the assemblage epidote-plagioclase relative to conclusions in a paper by R. W. R. Rutland. Evidence is summarized showing that the temperature of the reaction is sensitive to the Si-Al order of the plagioclase and the water pressure of the rock. The An content of the plagioclase consequently is not a reliable indicator of degree of metamorphism. In reply, Rutland holds that the plagioclase does not always start as the high-temperature (disordered) form and that in the paper under discussion he was dealing with conditions of regional, not contact metamorphism. Several subfacies on the basis of plagioclase composition are defined.
