Abstract
Downwasting of both resistant and nonresistant rocks to a common level under humid temperate climatic conditions results in a surface which can be interpreted only as a Davisian peneplain. The implied crustal and base-level stability is a geologic fact although the time factor may not be known. Mutual adjustment of interrelated runoff surfaces is an equally valid concept, and possibly applies to most nongraded streams, such as those of the Piedmont Plateau, as well as to graded streams
