Abstract
Kansan till, extensively exposed in a quarry in northeastern Kansas, contains locally derived rock debris, mainly Paleozoic limestone and dolomite, in its lower part, whereas the upper part contains, in addition, a high percentage of Precambrian igneous, metamorphic, and quartzitic fragments derived from distant sources in northern U.S.A. and Canada. It is believed that the first part of the Kansan ice sheet to reach Kansas consisted of ice formed by precipitation along an ice-front zone and this locally formed ice contained rock debris of local origin only. Ice that arrived later had formed in Canada and carried crystalline rock debris from distant northern sources.
