Abstract
The stratigraphy and paleontology of the Carboniferous deposits of Japan are reviewed, and the validity of the two systems, Mississippian and Pennsylvanian, is confirmed. The Mississippian is represented largely by dark slates with extensive tuffaceous material. The Pennsylvanian deposits are mainly calcareous. The boundary is located between the Onimaru and Nagaiwa series.
