Abstract
Intrusion of Tertiary quartz diorite into Triassic dolomite produced metasomatic veins up to 5 cm in width at or near the intrusive contact. Progressing from dolomite to quartz diorite, five zones of mineral assemblages can be distinguished: (1) calcite + forsterite, (2) diopside, (3) diopside + tremolite + clinozoisite + chlorite in the contact zone, (4) clinozoisite + or - plagioclase, and (5) a silica-enriched zone. Thermodynamic data for minerals and aqueous species in the system CaO-MgO-SiO ~2~ -Al ~2~ O ~3~ -H ~2~ O-CO ~2~ permit determination of the fluid composition in local equilibrium with the various phase assemblages observed in the metasomatic veins. Geologic observations, together with comparative analysis of thermodynamic phase relations and fluid compositions over a range of pressures and temperatures, suggest that the metasomatic assemblages formed over a period of thousands of years by reaction of the country rock with an H ~2~ O-rich fluid.\--Modified journal abstract.
