Abstract
Background: CAH significantly worsens the course of asthma and the quality of life (QL) of patients in the cold climate. It is unknown to what extent it affects the QL long-term dynamics. Aim: To estimate QL in asthmatics with CAH during a five-year period depending on changes in the emotional status and asthma control. Methods: 30 patients with mild-to-moderate asthma were interviewed with interval of 5 years by general (SF-36) and specific (AQLQ) questionnaires. The asthma control was identified by ACT, the anxiety and depression by HADS. The interviewing was done during the winter. All the respondents got the controller therapy. 1st group included the patients with CAH and 2nd group - without it. Results. In the 1st group the level of anxiety decreased (from 9.3±1.4 to 6.8±0.7 points, p<0.05) and the negative influence of emotions (RE) on the self-evaluation of the general QL (51.1±13.0 and 84.6±8.7 points, p<0.05) got lower too. The level of asthma control increased from 13.4±14.3 to 17.2±1.1 points (p<0.01). But there was no five-year dynamics in QL by AQLQ in this group. In the 2nd group emotional changes were not revealed, but there was a significant improvement in PF (from 73.2±2.8 to 82.9±3.9 points, p<0.05). The specific QL changed by scales of activity (from 4.2±0.3 to 4.8±0.3, p<0.05) and of symptoms (from 4.5±0.2 to 5.0±0.2, p<0.01). The asthma control has improved from 13.6±0.8 to 17.4±1.2 (p<0.01). Conclusion: The presence of CAH influences the level of specific QL negatively, which is revealed through the absence of its dynamics. The decrease of anxiety leads to the reduction of the negative influence of emotions on the self-esteem of the general QL.
