Abstract
Several hills near Turtle Cove, John Day State Park, represent part of an erosion surface on Cretaceous and pre-Cretaceous rocks, capped by volcanic claystones and siltstones of the John Day formation of late Oligocene-early Miocene age. Formation of the surface took place in Oligocene time. The red color of the unconformably overlying John Day rocks is due to iron oxide-stained montmorillonite formed by weathering of John Day volcanic ash during deposition.
