Abstract
Petrographic modal analysis of a low-rank graywacke in the Upper Pocahontas Group showed an increase in matrix from about 35 percent in fresh rock to 45 percent in altered spalls from the boulders. Dioctahedral vermiculite is found as the altered equivalent of the chlorite in the fresh rock. Expansion of the outer shells of the boulders is attributed to the formation of the vermiculite.
