Abstract
A general description of the Kau District and of the yellow dust (Pahala ash) which covers much of the surface. Emerson recognizes the yellow dust as volcanic ash and abandons Dutton9s (1884) idea of a marine origin. The source of the ash is believed to have been a large crater marked by the valleys near the hills Puu Iki, Puu Enuhe, Makanao, and Kaumaikeohu (the "Mohokea caldera" of C.H. Hitchcock, 1903).
