Abstract
Phillips presents chemical analyses of a lava stalagmite and Pele9s hair from Kilauea, collected by W. Libbey, Jr. He abandons the theory of formation of lava stalactites by deposition from hydrous solution on the grounds that if they were formed in that way, the iron should be totally oxidized. Textures of the stalactites are like those of ordinary lava, and chemical composition is like that of Pele9s hair. They are probably formed from fused lava.
