Abstract
The theory of thermoluminescence as a function of temperature was tested by measuring the natural thermoluminescence of samples of limestone collected from several climatic areas. The agreement between the theory and the experimental results is satisfactory. In non-polar regions of the world, with average erosion rates and geothermal gradient, the number of electrons responsible for the 230 degrees C glow-curve peak for calcite is in equilibrium with the average temperature of the hottest month. In polar areas the equilibrium is not reached, as frigid conditions have not existed in the area for the necessary length of time.
