Abstract
Two belts of syn-Acadian mafic intrusions. The Central Maine Belt is progressively more altered and metamorphosed toward the southwest. At the northeast end, the Moxie Pluton represents the least altered and most important example in the belt. Forsterite contents of the most primitive olivines are consistent with the derivation of the earliest magma from a largely unfractionated mantle melt. The Coastal Maine Belt is spatially associated with the Siluro-Devonian coastal volcanics. The age difference, however, between the volcanics and plutonics suggests that they may not be directly related. The important Pocomoonshine Gabbro appears to represent the well layered roof zone of a major fractionated body. Mineral compositions are similar to those in the Moxie Pluton and suggest a similar primary magma. Intrusions in both belts have complex contacts, pronounced contact aureoles, and were all deformed by late Acadian deformation.--Modified journal abstract.
