Abstract
The Buxaceae (boxwood family) is a primarily tropical or subtropical Old World family that has two modern genera, Pachysandra and Sarcococca, common to Asia and North America. The wide separation of the members of the Buxaceae indicates that the family is ancient and was once larger and more widespread. This indication is supported by the occurrence of fossil Pachysandra in strata of Tertiary age in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Wyoming, and North and South Dakota, and in strata of Cretaceous and Paleocene age in California. Taxonomy, morphology, and distribution of both Recent and fossil pollen of the family, and nine localities for fossil Pachysandra pollen in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and British Columbia are considered in detail.
