Abstract
The distinction between turbulent flow and laminar flow in water and other liquids has long been recognized. Among students of hydraulics laminar flow has been considered to take place down to indefinitely low hydraulic heads and velocities with the consequence that rates of flow in a given opening are in direct linear proportion to hydraulic head. Experiments here reported show that in thin cracks and at low velocities, the rates of flow are diminished much more rapidly than the hydraulic heads and that such diminution is a systematic function of time. Under certain conditions, rates of flow, with head constant, have been reduced more than a thousand fold, due to a process here interpreted as growth of absorbed molecular films on the walls of the cracks. Within the limits of this behavior and at the lower range of hydraulic flow, large and significant deviations from rates calculated by Darcy9s law may under certain conditions take place.
