Abstract
A definite relationship is found between the fold axes, the olivine orientation, and the joint pattern of the peridotite in the Dun mountain area, New Zealand. Analysis of the olivine orientation relative to the tectonic setting of the Nelson peridotite belt leads to the conclusion that in this case it is related to the axes of regional folding and is probably produced by the folding forces. The c-axis of the olivine may be oriented parallel to the axis of folding, and the b-axis may lie in the axial plane of upright folds, though it may also tend to form, with the a-axis, a girdle in the a-c tectonic plane.
