Abstract
McTaggart9s attempt at a semiquantitative treatment of the "gas emission" hypothesis of nuee ardente flow is shown to give results of the wrong order of magnitude when applied to an industrial process in which a mobile state is maintained in crushed particles by gas emission. McTaggart9s treatment is criticized, and an alternative semiquantitative treatment, based on the published results of experiments on fluidization processes, is attempted and shown to give qualitative results of an order of magnitude indicating that gas emission by the particles is adequate to produce the mobile state of nuees ardentes and maintain it during emplacement. In his reply, McTaggart elaborates on the principles governing fluidization.
