Abstract
Clay-sized detrital sediments of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, closely reflect the intense tropical weathering conditions of their basaltic source area. Most of the silica and alumina present is amorphous allophane or in weakly crystalline halloysite. It is suggested that unstable muds of this composition may have been the raw materials for authigenesis of illite found in old sedimentary rocks.
