Abstract
Using available thermochemical data, tentative calculations are presented for 2 univariant reactions in the hydrothermal system, MgO-SiO ~2~ -H ~2~ O: reaction I governing the stability of forsterite; reaction II governing the stability of serpentine. The calculated curves show fairly good agreement with the experimental curves of Bowen and Tuttle. Calculations are extended to cover the petrologically more interesting cases of the stability of chrysolite (Fo90) and the stability of the assemblage serpentine-magnetite. Each curve shows a drop of only 20-30 degrees C. over the P (H ~2~ O) range considered (500-3300 atm). Calculated values of P(O ~2~ ) correspond to stability in the magnetite field. Further calculations are made to include field occurrences where the metamorphic assemblage serpentine-magnetite-awaruite (FeNi ~3~ ) is found. The presence of the alloy, awaruite, places a close restriction of P(O ~2~ ). The tentative conclusion is made that in these field occurrences serpentinization occurred at about 400 degrees C. and a total gas pressure of 1600 atm.
