Abstract
THE proceiis of bre'lthing in animals and plants is essentially the same.In both the free ox'ygen from the air, or surrounding hledium, is cart'ied into the living tissues, where, after a series of chemical changes, carbonic acid, water and perhaps some minor compounds are evolved as excretol'y products ..The changes in the living eell, alike in animals and plants, determine the amount of oxygen taken up and the products given oft'.In both an increase of templ't'ature is a dil'ect effect of respiration.In this pt'oeess of respiration, for plants as well as animals, a cel'tnin amount of absolutely necessary force is secured for sup• plying the life-functions of the organism.If either the living animall)r plant-cell be deprived of oxygen for any considerable length of ti me the life acti vities cease, aud, later, death ensues.'l'his oxygen-respiration is then a constant need of the living cell, whether it be of plant or animal.Whell plants possessing chlorophyll are exposed to the sunlight they canyon a process of assimilation, in which organic substance is produced from carbonic acid and water, and oxygen set free.The amollnt of carbonic acid decomposed and of oxygen given off, in this preparation of organic food for the plant, far exceeds, as a rule, the carbonic acid excreted and the oxygen taken up in respiration.Thus it happens that the process of respiration, in plants containing chlorophyll and exposed to the light, is a hidden one, and difficult of demonstmtion ..
