Abstract
Perret describes pahoehoe and aa, lava tubes, driblet spires, tumuli (Schollendome), and lava trees and tree molds, with brief remarks on the mode of formation of some of the features. He includes a good photo of Little Beggar and another driblet cone. He distinguishes primary tumuli produced by contraction during cooling from those affected by later intumescence. The former have shield-like profiles, the latter are much steeper. He notes that cooling of lava is an irreversible process, such that the temperature at which solidified lava can be remelted is higher than the temperature of the liquid from which it originally consolidated. He concludes that no remelting of tree-molds will occur after they initially form.
