Abstract
The African elephant is abundantly represented by quite a large number of semi-fossilized teeth but none of these can be differentiated even sub-specifically from the living form and the problem of the origin of this species remains obscure. Simpson9s reclassification of the Mammalia is approved with respect to Proboscidea although a critical revision of specific identifications was found necessary.
