Abstract
Dutton describes Kilauea caldera in 1882. The inner pit had been completely filled up, and two lava lakes were active. He gives a good description and a correct explanation of crustal foundering. He describes the olivine content of lavas from Kilauea and Mauna Loa, suspecting that the compositions of olivine-rich and olivine-poor lavas are identical, the olivine having crystallized in the one case and not yet crystallized in the other. Dutton regards Kilauea as completely independent from Mauna Loa. He describes the volcanic action of Mauna Loa and remarks on the quietness of the eruptions and the paucity of cinder cones. Mokuaweoweo was inactive at the time of his visit to Kilauea. He describes Mauna Kea and calls attention to the greater explosiveness of its eruptions, thus explaining the contrasting shapes of the two volcanoes. He briefly describes Hualalai and Kohala; Hualalai is reported to have erupted in 1801, 1805, and 1811.
