Abstract
Discrepancies between the calculated average chemical composition of all known sedimentary rocks and the theoretical average, which corresponds to the average composition of igneous rocks, may be explained by a difference in composition between the primary and present-day sial crust of the earth. The parent material of the sediments may have been primary continental rocks which were poorer in alkali and magnesium and richer in calcium than recent igneous rocks.
