Abstract
An account of experiments performed by Perret and E.S. Shepherd to determine the temperature of the lava lake and to obtain a sample of liquid lava from the "Old Faithful" fountain. They obtained a final temperature of 1,050 degrees C after two unsuccessful attempts. (The apparatus used included platinum thermocouple elements in an iron casing) Perret explains observations of "white heat" as being due to gas interference as viewed at night. He shows diagrams and photos of the cable arrangement used for sampling and temperature measurement and a photograph of a sample taken by lowering a plumber9s soldering pot attached to a steel cable. Perret recognizes that the chemical reaction with sulfurous gases is important in destroying iron and nickel metal at temperatures far lower than their melting points. The article includes the report of A. Brun (1913).
