Abstract
In the Fransciscan Formation pure end-member jadeite is restricted to metasomatized leucocratic masses within serpentinite. Jadeitic pyroxene coexists with quartz in metagraywackes, and omphacite or acmitic pyroxene are present in metabasalts; metacherts contain acmitic pyroxene. Chemical, optical, and X-ray parameters of pyroxenes from representative rocks show strong variations related to rock composition. Experimentally, jadeite and related pyroxenes are favored by high pressures. In silica-deficient serpentinites, pure jadeite forms, whereas in other rock types, under the same metamorphism, where excess silica is present, only jadeite pyroxene and omphacite are stable.
