Abstract
Results of analyses of modern pollen contents of surface samples are applied to an interpretation of late and postglacial pollen assemblages from lake and bog deposits of central Japan. The data show that the early postglacial boreal forest stage was preceded by a late glacial pine stage and was interrupted by a warm interval accompanied by limited expansion of temperate species. Other characteristics of vegetational shifts and climatic fluctuations are also discussed.
