Abstract
The circulation in Halemaumau is primarily due to increase of density of the surface layers from loss of gas and cooling. These layers become heavier than the lava beneath and tend to sink. The lava erupted in the fountains is also cooled and degassed and, on falling back, sinks into the lake, forming local low areas toward which the heavy surface layers flow. Most of the fountains are over the conduit, due to the upward escape of gas bubbles; hence it is there the surface layers sink, the lava rising at the end of the lake farthest from the conduit.
