Abstract
THE fossil spider, represented in the accompanying figuI•e, was found by Mr. S. S. Strong, in one of the well known iron• stone concretions from Mazon Creek, Grundy County, Illinois, in "the lower part of the true Coal Measnres," and is now preserved in the Museum of Yale College.The specimen, as seen upon the fractured sul'face of the concretion, presents for examination only the dorsal surface, and the other half of the concretion, or the cover, adds little or nothing to the knowledge of the fossil.The outline of the cephalothorax in the 8pecimen is indistinct, but meaSUl'es about lomm (•4 in.) in length by 9 mm ("35 in.) in breadth.Near its anterior margin is a tubercle, which seems to present traces of a me-r~ dian longitudinal division, as if a pair of oval * From i'LpfTpov, a joint, and A;IH;O~, a spider, referring to the segmentation of the abdomen.
